Operations Manager
The Next Generation Data Center Automation Platform

BladeLogic Operations Manager is the industry-leading platform for the management, control and enforcement of configuration changes in the data center. More Global 2000 enterprises have deployed BladeLogic in their data centers than any other automation solution. BladeLogic customers have dramatically lowered their operating costs for managing servers and critical business applications by automating key data center functions including:

  • Discovery and Inventory Management
  • Server and Application Provisioning
  • Patch Management
  • Server and Application Configuration Changes
  • Compliance Measurement, Enforcement and Reporting
  • Ad-Hoc Tasks and Remote Administration

  •
    Orchestration Manager

The term Data Center Orchestration broadly describes the sequence in which processes need to be executed to achieve a given operational objective. Invariably, there are multiple operational objectives that an IT organization strives to achieve, all of which occur in parallel. Best practices like IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) have clearly identified what the processes should be, described their mutual interactions and defined them in such a way that one or more can be integrated together. One of the key operational objectives revolves around CHANGE.

    Discovery Manager

To manage today's rapidly expanding server environments, administrators need a real-time, comprehensive inventory of all server and application configuration elements. Traditional inventory and asset management solutions store a sub-set of configuration information in a database, resulting in data that is inherently stale and incomplete, often weeks or months old.

BladeLogic Discovery Manager, a component of the BladeLogic Operations Manager suite of data center automation products, allows IT organizations to browse configuration data for servers and application services in real-time. The information gathered is extremely granular and includes packages, patches, files, registries, configuration file parameters, and .NET and J2EE components. BladeLogic Discovery Manager also allows the tracking of changes to configuration elements over time.

    Compliance Manager

Even the best run data centers cannot systematically enforce policies. While servers may be initially provisioned to match a security or organizational policy, their configurations inevitably drift over time due to continual configuration changes driven by business demands. Regulatory compliance (e.g., SOX, GLBA, SAS 70, HIPAA, FISMA, PCI etc.) pose even greater challenges.

Today, IT compliance management is a manual process that requires domain experts to implement security and regulatory risk management policies. Risk management policies set standards for security, configuration, and change control processes, attempting to ensure that all access controls are set correctly and that all changes are audited on a regular basis. From a compliance enforcement perspective it is very laborious and time-comsuming process. Add to this, the pressure of demonstrating existence of appropriate IT Controls from a regulatory requirements perspective.

IT Compliance therefore has to automate itself to address all three requirements of:

  • Compliance Measurement
  • Compliance Enforcement
  • Controls Reporting

    Configuration Manager

Existing approaches to configuration and change control management range from highly expensive and purely reactive efforts when problems arise, to manual process-intenstive configuration and change control procedures. Typically, when administrators must implement a change, they run custom scripts or modify one server at a time using point tools like Windows Terminal Services, telnet, or SSH. This process is time-consuming and limits the responsiveness at most data centers. In addition, the manual nature of these changes inevitably leads to errors causing drift in server configurations.

BladeLogic Configuration Manager, a component of the BladeLogic Operations Manager suite of data center automation products, allows IT organizations to provision, patch, configure, and update servers across platforms and data centers. It enables consistency in change and configuration management with error-prone scripting and manual intervention.

    Application Manager

The ability to manage frequent application updates for all phases of a business from development to production is a critical test of an IT organization’s agility and alignment with business operations. Today, updates are often performed manually, raising the likelihood of errors. Server environments vary between Development, QA, Staging, and Production, and these differences often cause problems when applications are promoted between environments.

BladeLogic Application Release Manager, a component of Bladelogic's Data Center Automation solution suite, enables IT organizations to automate the process of application updates, resulting in shortened release cycles, application configuration alignment, and automated updates across groups. Users can ensure that server and application configurations are consistent across environments by tracking application compliance in each environment against a distributed application policy model. All deployment actions can be authorized based on user roles, ensuring appropriate levels of user access. If necessary, deployments can be rolled back easily.

    Virtualization Manager

BladeLogic Virtualization Manager enables IT organizations to manage both physical and virtual
environments from a unified management platform resulting in greater infrastructure consistency and reduced downtime. Through BladeLogic Virtualization Manager's integrated approach, it is transparent to an end user whether a given server or application service being managed is running on a physical machine or on a virtual instance residing in a virtual container.
